How can Hypnotherapy help with chronic pain?
Hypnotherapy can help in various ways with chronic pain conditions.
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is pain that lasts for more than three months, even after the original injury or illness has healed. It can be constant or come and go, affecting daily life, mood, and overall well-being. Unlike acute pain (which is the body’s natural response to injury), chronic pain continues long after the body has recovered, often without a clear cause.
Types of chronic pain
- Nerve related pain
- Over sensitive nervous system e.g. Fibromyalgia or CFS
- Headaches & Migraines
- Organ pain e.g. IBS, Endometriosis or Adenomyosis
- Past injury pain
Did you know that it's not just your body in charge of chronic pain but your mind too? Have you ever had a stressful week or two and then your back goes? No warning, but you just can't move all of a sudden? You don't remember injuring it but it could be an old injury. But then, you have a less stressful week and your back is miraculously recovered? This is where the mind comes into play. You have injured it previously and it healed. However, your mind makes the connection between stress and tension/pain in your back. Now, each time you have a very stressful week or two you get back pain. This has happened to me. It's your mind and body's way of giving you an early warning alarm to slow down. It's yelling at you that things are getting a bit too much. However, it doesn't have to get to this point. Hypnotherapy can help you listen to your body so it doesn't get to the yelling stage.
How Hypnotherapy can help
Hypnotherapy can help rewire your mind's perception of pain by "turning down the volume" of discomfort. Hypnotherapy can activate the parasympathetic nervous system promoting deep relaxation. It can help with the emotions you have around the pain and how it affects you day to day giving you tools and techniques to use at home when you need to.
Just remember all behaviour has a positive purpose, even if you don’t see it yet. We understand that everyone is doing the best they can with the information they have at the time.
